DigiM's unique imaging techniques were able to illuminate the need for more porosity in the design of a research grade contraceptive ring after it failed in release tests.

Through FIB-SEM imaging and percolation simulation, DigiM uncovered that lack of a percolating path among the active pharmaceutical ingredient particles explained the failure: water molecules can find their way through the nano-porosity of the polymer matrix, but drug domains are too dispersed to form a connected network while drug molecules are too large to be carried out through the polymer nano-porosity.
